"Transformation + chaos as Pluto enters Aquarius - 1

Post by admin »

Noel Eastwood's latest Pluto's Cave Newsletter is so very relevant to this topic I asked his permission to post it in this area. (Note: Images are omitted).

"The planet of uncompromising transformation, Pluto, first enters the rebellious, humanitarian sign of Aquarius on March 23rd, 2023. It retrogrades back into Capricorn twice (on June 11, 2023, and September 1, 2024) before moving forward into Aquarius again, this time to stay, on November 19th, 2024. Pluto will then remain in Aquarius for the next 18 years.

As Pluto crosses and recrosses the cusp separating Capricorn and Aquarius, I expect that many of us might feel uncomfortable, insecure and yet strangely excited. Capricorn wants to hold on to tradition and keep everything the same -- including all existing power structures -- while Aquarius demands change, and is especially concerned with the distribution of power across groups and communities, rather than only among the privileged elite. Pluto's natural instinct toward transformation may be a better match with the need for change, even revolution, that drives Aquarius, as opposed to the tight focus on tradition and preservation that Capricorn embodies.

Taking a step backwards to view the world since Pluto's entry into Capricorn in 2008, the intervening years have seen the rise of conservative, authoritarian leaders on a global scale. Capricorn is the sign governing conservative forces–tradition, the past, old-fashioned, tried-and-true ways—and the dark side of Pluto in Capricorn has been at work aiding the rise of patriarchal and oligarchical attitudes across the world. This has led to an unprecedented amassing of further riches for the powerful and wealthy. We have seen the rise of right-wing forces engaging in corrupt and deceitful behaviour to manipulate and control their people.

“All broadcast television in Russia is either owned or controlled by the state.” (Inside Putin’s Propaganda Machine, The New Yorker, May 18, 2022). This has allowed Vladimir Putin to broadcast his unchallenged version of the truth to 145 million Russians by characterizing Ukrainians as “Neo-Nazis”. And in the United States, about 115 million Americans continue to believe Donald Trump’s Big Lie about the presidential election. Worldwide, the Democracy Index shows 37.1% of the world population now living in authoritarian regimes, and during Pluto’s transit through Capricorn, the United States has been downgraded from “full democracy” to “flawed democracy.” For more information on this topic please read: Tyrants are gutting democracy with populism, polarisation and post-truth.

Pluto in Aquarius - a short summary

As astrologers, we might expect to see an easing of this global movement towards authoritarianism as Pluto slowly leaves hierarchical Capricorn to enter revolutionary Aquarius. As the sign of humanitarian and environmental guardianship, Aquarius is driven by a strong sense of justice. The rebel Aquarius aspires to do the greatest good for everyone and everything. We can only hope that Pluto's transit through Aquarius will move humanity to push back and rise up against the forces of corruption, immorality, greed and injustice worldwide. One would like to think that this will happen as the transformative power delivered by Pluto's entry into Aquarius is harnessed by humanity at large for its own salvation. Those in power, however, could also harness Pluto's destructive energy to unleash civil strife, conflict and even warfare.

Moreover, every planet and sign has its dark side. The last Pluto transit through Aquarius from 1777 to1797 encompassed both the American and French Revolutions, leaving the world dramatically changed forever. It must be noted, however, that although the French Revolution began with the overthrow of the monarchy, the abolition of the feudal system and the declaration of the ‘Rights of Man’, it later descended into the bloodbath of the Reign of Terror. The shadow side of Aquarius includes a chilly detachment from human emotions, justified by the lofty intellectual ideals and values that take precedence.

As humanity comes to terms with Pluto's sojourn through Aquarius, many of us will likely find that the old traditional ways of living no longer fit our needs. With the growing threat of climate collapse, financial instability, warfare, and the constant struggle to live within the boundaries of meagre earnings, we may find the only way forward is through revolution.

Pluto in Aquarius may disrupt humanity in the form of grassroots community-led rebellions against the status quo, pushing society toward chaos. This could be followed by real transformation as new ways of living -- as well as new rules, laws and treaties – are introduced. Is Pluto’s instinctual drive toward transformation always for the good? Generally speaking, the answer is ultimately 'yes', but the road to change is usually bumpy, often marked by discomfort, pain, resistance and fighting along the way. And we know that the universe is dynamic - nothing stays the same forever and anything can happen.

Pluto will leave Aquarius on January 19th, 2044, possibly marking twenty years of rebellion, revolution, disruption, mind-boggling insights, misinformation, magical thinking and unrealistic expectations. Or, we may see twenty years of humanitarian uprising, leading to systemic and much-needed reform of corrupt institutions. Or both.

P.S. I just found this insightful article by astrologer, Lynn Hayes: Pluto in Capricorn: A History Lesson

"Pluto goes into Capricorn when a nation that has risen to greatness is on the back end of a war that has cost a fortune. So great is this cost that they seek to recover their losses in a grossly unfair and oppressive manner; So powerful is the need to obtain money that even companies become big and powerful enough to run other countries. The people suffer until the burden becomes oppressive. The control and manipulation becomes so much that they say enough is enough. They demand the unalienable rights of ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’. Those who tried to impose their will on others were turned back. Now which period of time am I talking about -1762 to 1778 or 2008 to 2024? Personally I think that the parallels are a little too scary to ignore."

Is there hope for our future?

Yes, there is hope, but it requires each of us to take responsibility for our beliefs and attitudes towards others and our fragile environment. Pluto's entry into Aquarius may very well end up as a complete fizz, like a wet firecracker, but we desperately need its positive revolutionary qualities to activate and harness our humanitarian nature. We need something dramatic to wake us up and force us to actually do something right for the world rather than allowing those in power to act in their own self-interest, as we usually do.

Barbara Moore, creator of the Steampunk Tarot, wrote about Victorian life in a way that seems remarkably apropos to our modern era of media and internet noise, static, misinformation and outright propaganda: "In the great city that was Victorian London, communication was easier than at any other time in human history. Information was shared quickly, and there was plenty of it... Knowledge abounded. Naturally, when one is the recipient of so much data, it is easy to assume that a lot of input equals increased wisdom. Upon reflection, we know that simply is not true. In addition, in the midst of so much intellectual noise, there is the danger of one's own true voice being drowned." Steampunk Tarot Manual, by Barbara Moore, 2013, page 73.
