A View of the Planets

The work of Swiss Psychiatrist C G Jung has often been associated with astrological thinking and much has been written about it, Some good, some not so good. What do you think? Do they have a connection, such as through Jung's idea of Synchronicity?

A View of the Planets

The Astrological Complexes Copyright Rodney Ravenswood 2003

The planets and their natures as complex cores can be broken up into the following four groups:

i)the Sun and Moon - these are the primary personal planets which, from a geocentric perspective, move in direct relation to the earth. They represent primary aspects of the ego complex as it looks outward or inward; what we might call in more metaphysical terms the inner and outer ego.

(ii) Mercury, Venus and Mars - secondary personal planets which move with secondary relation to the Sun as separate from the earth but which are retrograde for only a minority of the time. They relate to processes of connection, interaction and intimacy as personal and subjective processes which involve engagements within ones personal space. Retrograde motion seems to represent difficulty manifesting the expected qualities of personal interaction related to the planet in its natal placement and may even suggest characteristics more in keeping with the opposite placement.

ii)Jupiter and Saturn - social or culturally collective planets which move with more marked secondary motion in relation to the Sun and are retrograde for a significant proportion of the time. They represent modes of expression and interplay relating to social reality and the individual's place in it. Retrograde motion seems to represent a tendency towards challenging the socially expected orientation related to a planet’s placement and a more individualistic attitude towards authority and social values in this area.

(iv) Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto - transpersonal planets which move with an even more marked secondary motion in relation to the Sun which is as significant as motion in relation to the earth and are retrograde for almost 50% of the time. They relate to collective and generational energies of a transpersonal nature and influence the emergence of such factors into collective and personal consciousness. Retrograde motion may suggest difficulty integrating the transpersonal factors relating to the planetary placement into personal consciousness and every day life.

1. The Primary Personal Planets

THE SUN - the extraverted, or Yang, aspect of the Ego complex core.
Has to do with integration of experiences of oneself in the external world into a conscious and evolving sense of personal identity. Ultimately represents capacity to consciously act as an agent of the Self or higher power in outer life. Major aspect of the Father Complex/God as Father and sense of personal ego identity in its extroverted mode. Yang aspect of the ego complex and identity grounded in external life and experiences

THE MOON - the introverted, or Yin, aspect of the Ego complex core.
Has to do with mediating personal experiences of the psyche into consciousness and one's evolving sense of
oneself in relation to the unconscious or one’s sense of having an inner life. Ultimately represents the nature of experiences of the reality of the unconscious as other. Major aspect of the Mother Complex/Goddess as Mother and the Yin aspect of the ego complex which relates to a sense of oneself as more than simply what one does in outer life.

2. The Secondary Personal Planets

MERCURY - Hermaphroditic, was once called Hermaphrodites.
Has to do with perception and communication as Yin and Yang aspects of channelling information about reality. The
messenger of the gods, The personal every day complex of knowing, or gathering information. Ultimately represents the character of our experience of God/Goddess/Self as the author of reality as we experience it and the manner in which we receive and transmit that knowing. Determines the nature of our every day perception of reality.

VENUS - the Yin aspect o f personal connection t o the life and other beings.
The complex core to do with intimacy as a Yin experience and so with personal relationships and attraction. The Puella (young woman as lover/intimate companion) Complex. To do with receiving others into one's intimate spaces, love, sensuality/ sexuality, sense of aesthetics and intimate connection with another as expression and receiving of the divine in each other. How I draw what I want to me.

MARS - the Yang aspect of personal connection to life and others beings.
The complex core to do with the personal will and assertion, aggression and penetration as connection to life via conquest, impulsive and at times rash behaviour, initiating, catalytic and inseminating energies. The Hero Complex, love as hunting and conquest, and penetration to the other's inner reality; to make an impact on life, to prove myself. How I get what I want.

3. The Social or Cultural Planets/Collective Consciousness

JUPITER - the Yang/extraverted aspect of collective consciousness.
The spirit of the law, conscience as the right to express one's truth, the crusader and sometimes fanatic, expansion of consciousness, synthesising intellect, idealism, philosophy and the social aspect of spirituality or religion, and knowledge, as liberating principles; the father/parent as guide and mentor encouraging change and growth; profligacy, lack of commitment and recklessness. The Puer (Eternal Youth) Complex.

SATURN - the Yin/introverted aspect of collective consciousness.
The letter of the law, structure and form as the cultural matrix, conscience as moral edict, duty, obligation and guilt, the parent as limiter, law giver, and teacher of discipline and, responsibility; consolidation and stability, resistance to change, insecurity, The Senex (Old Man) complex in father or mother's animus. In its higher form the container or alchemical vessel in which transformation is fostered.

4. The Transpersonal Planets

CHIRON - the energy of The Wounded Healer/Mentor/Guru Complex;
to do with one's primary sense of archetypal wounding which is in fact a transpersonal reality related to an archetypal gift. Though usually projected onto the personal level (parents/family) this is an inherent factor. Mentoring and guidance at a spiritual level such as seen in the figure of Yoda in Star Wars. The need for sacrifice of a too inflated or spiritual view of life in order that repressed or sublimated energies may be released into every day life.

URANUS - a Yang energy, the Complex Core of Abstract Spiritual Principles or Revelation or Beliefs;
Fixed and abstract systems of belief about life and the expression of the divine principle as law. Detached, visionary, abstract intellect, uncomfortable with earthy and feeling realities. Issues of sublimation and subjection of subjective experience to abstract judgment or concepts. The Awakener who breaks through old and outmoded mental structures and prepares the way for change.

NEPTUNE - a Yin energy of diffuse, mystical and undifferentiated quality, the Complex Core of Mystical Experience;
The oneness of all life and reality, undifferentiated awareness, lack of defining ego consciousness, or the ego with knowledge of its source in the reality of the psyche, mystical experience and perspective valued above daily concrete reality, the reality of the eternal psyche as a priori to physical life. The essential Yin unifying principle, psychic gifts and abilities. Martyr and victim issues, deceit and deception, ungrounded idealism.

PLUTO - a Yin energy of withdrawal into the underworld, the Complex Core of Transformation Death and Rebirth; Fateful apparently destructive forces which destabilise outer life where-ever one fails to heed the need for renewal via transformation. Processes which involve letting go and death-like experiences - The dark face of the great Goddess who demands death and rebirth for renewal. Transpersonal forces which the ego cannot control and which demand acknow-ledgement of the autonomy of the psyche. Personal transformation via breaking down of outmoded psychic structures.
