To me, the suggestion sounds more like encouraging folk to exercise their God given free will (which is like swimming against very strong tides). In reality though, individuals are driven (at least to a major extent) by their respective Karmas - specially so (when cupid strikes), at an young age when folk usually fall or succumb to Karmic and/or emotional compulsions.

There are numerous cases I've known, when individuals or their parents patiently look for good matches, spend excessively and wait a long time (they end up not liking the alliance or reject good matches for silly reasons) and eventually succumb to forces/influences out of their control. There are quite a few logical write-ups about why managing/maintaining spousal relationship is almost always (but for very few exceptions) a challenge.

So, in reality, we can preach/encourage/guide all we want... people end-up being driven by and dealing with their respective Karma/Destiny.
