Great and Grand Conjunctions

Great and Grand Conjunctions

Conjunctions are important in astrology, none more so than that of the giant planets in the outer solar system. The only kind that the ancient or medieval astrologers knew about, those of Jupiter and Saturn, have received a lot of attention, as they should. But what of the others? While conjunctions involving Jupiter and either Uranus and Neptune happen more frequently than that of Jupiter and Saturn the rest are much less common.
What is particularly interesting about them is the patterns they create if a calendar of 30 or 360 years is used. These time periods are often called months or years of the gods as one of our years is only like a day to them.
Below is given a description of each of these kind of conjunctions. For the sake of convenience those of Jupiter and Saturn shall be called a 'great conjunction.' Since Uranus is at a greater distance from the Sun the pairing of it and Jupiter will be named a 'greater conjunction.' Likewise, since Neptune is the furthest away, those between it and Jupiter can be referred to as 'greatest conjunctions.' For Saturn and Uranus the term 'grand conjunction' may be appropriate. Those between Saturn and Neptune can be called 'grander conjunctions' and for the rarest of all, the alignments of Uranus and Neptune, 'grandest conjunction.'
A calendar using 30 year 'months' will help show a number of cycles. Just as a full moon usually occurs around the same day of the month as the previous one, so do many of the conjunctions, although there are often separations of two, three or six months between some of the more interresting ones. For many reasons that may soon become apparent, an epoch centered on the winter solstice of 1999 shall be employed.

Great Conjunctions

The best conjunctions known before the discovery of new planets was that of Jupiter and Saturn. They are now called 'great conjunctions' due to their significance and rarity. They occur only about once every twenty years. The last one was on May 28, 2000 and the next shall be on December 21, 2020; right aound the time of the winter solstice.
What is fascinating about these is that they seem to almost always take place in a sign of the same element for quite a long time. Here are some examples from the recent past.

1981/03/04-19:02 188* 06' Libra Air
1961/02/19-00:01 295* 12' Capricorn Earth
1940/10/20-04:41 42* 28' Taurus Earth
1921/09/10-04:15 176* 36' Virgo Earth
1901/11/28-16:28 284* 00' Capricorn Earth
1881/04/18-13:37 31* 36' Taurus Earth
1861/10/21-12:27 168* 22' Virgo Earth
1842/01/26-06:11 278* 54' Capricorn Earth
1821/06/19-17:11 24* 39' Aries Fire
1802/07/17-22:49 155* 08' Virgo Earth
1782/11/05-09:25 268* 07' Sagittarius Fire
1762/03/18-16:39 12* 22' Aries Fire
1742/08/30-20:52 147* 10' Leo Fire
1723/01/05-15:14 263* 20' Sagittarius Fire
1702/05/21-20:54 6* 37' Aries Fire
1683/02/09-01:19 136* 43' Leo Fire
1663/10/16-23:46 252* 58' Sagittarius Fire
1643/02/24-23:15 355* 07' Pisces Water

It seems quite obvious there are some historical paralells, from the Age of Enlightentment (Fire) to that of Revolution (Earth).
They form a trigon on the zodiac that repeats about every sixty years. This can be more easily seen on a 'calendar of the gods.'

Greater Conjunctions

The conjunctions of Jupiter and Uranus are common; about once every fourteen years. The last one was a triple that lasted from June 8, 2010 to January 4, 2011.
The interesting thing about these is that they are of the same gender for a very long time. They have been almost entirely masculine since the Renaissance until the Modern Era. Femininity will rule, however, for the foreseeable future. Here are some from the recent past.

There is about a one hundred and eighty year cycle where they fall on the same day in the calendar of the gods. That is, of course, a difference of six months, or half a year.

Greatest Conjunctions

Jupiter and Neptune conjunctions happen the most often, about once every thirteen years, the most recent being on December 21, 2009. Like the great conjunction of 2020, it fell right near the winter solstice.
Unlike the other ones they are seen in nearly the same part of the sky, only differing usually by one sign each time. The entire zodiac is represented in a short time. Here are some from the past.

1997/01/09-11:39 297* 09' Capricorn

Grand Conjunctions

The conjunctions that don't involve Jupiter are grand, such as that of Saturn and Uranus. These occur much less frequently, around once every forty five years, with the next being on June 28, 2032.
Like the greatest conjunctions the whole zodiac is quickly gone through, relatively speaking. Here are some from the past.

1988/06/26-17:03 268* 47' Sagittarius
1942/05/03-13:20 59* 20' Taurus
1897/06/01-09:22 236* 25' Scorpio
1852/03/15-07:24 32* 11' Taurus
1805/11/17-19:51 203* 22' Libra
1761/10/28-16:34 6* 03' Aries
1714/10/12-20:30 168* 54' Virgo
1671/03/05-12:16 340* 26' Pisces

Also like the greatest conjunctions there is a ninety year cycle on the calendar of the gods.

Month 12, Day 19 1988/06/26-17:03 268* 47' Sagittarius
Month 9, Day 18 1897/06/01-09:22 236* 25' Scorpio
Month 6, Day 16 1805/11/17-19:51 203* 22' Libra
Month 3, Day 15 1714/10/12-20:30 168* 54' Virgo

Month 11, Day 3 1942/05/03-13:20 59* 20' Taurus
Month 8, Day 3 1852/03/15-07:24 32* 11' Taurus
Month 5, Day 2 1761/10/28-16:34 6* 03' Aries
Month 3, Day 2 1671/03/05-12:16 340* 26' Pisces

Grander Conjunctions

A conjunction of Saturn and Neptune is also uncommon, about every thirty six years, with the next one happening on February 20, 2026.
While the great conjunctions seem to stick to the same element and the greater to the same gender for long periods, the grander ones seem to have the same quality for a time. Here are some from the recent past.

1989/06/24-03:10 281* 14' Capricorn Cardinal
1953/05/17-17:26 201* 38' Libra Cardinal
1917/08/01-05:20 124* 45' Leo Fixed
1882/05/12-17:07 46* 29' Taurus Fixed
1846/09/05-01:41 326* 19' Aquarius Fixed

1703/03/28-00:20 11* 44' Aries Cardinal
1667/01/02-10:34 291* 33' Capricorn Cardinal

Similar to the greater conjunctions there is a one hundred and eighty year cycle. This is, of course, half a year in the calendar of the gods.

Month 12, Day 20 1989/06/24-03:10 281* 14' Capricorn Cardinal
Month 6, Day 20 1809/12/01-15:36 246* 41' Sagittarius Mutable

Month 1, Day 28 1667/01/02-10:34 291* 33' Capricorn Cardinal

Grandest Conjunctions

At least we come to the rarest of all; the conjunctions of Uranus and Neptune. Only about once in every one hundred and seventy years do they grace us with their presence. Fortunate indeed is it to happen as only around their time can there be a syzygy of all the major planets. The Voyager 2 spacecraft took advantage of the position of the planets that occurred near the triple one that lasted from February 2 to October 24 of 1993. It is no coincidence that there have been many nice planetary alignments in the last couple of decades. The next one is on January 17, 2165.
Here are some from the past.

AD 1993/08/20-07:48 288* 48'
AD 1821/05/03-10:10 272* 51'
AD 1650/06/13-12:51 255* 34'

It takes twenty one conjunctions for them to circle the zodiac. Once every three they line up with Pluto, which is good because twenty one is divisible by three. Maybe Neptune can be master of the 'septile.' But even more interesting is the trigon created once every seventh conjunction. It is very similar to that of Jupiter and Saturn but for its duration between events. It may very well be possible that the ancient Sumerians, Babylonians and others chose to have units of time of sixty years to reflect the great conjunctions. But how long is it on average between every seventh grandest conjunction? Calculations show it to be twelve hundred years. Exactly twelve hundred years. Anyone familar with Vedic astrology will instantly know the significance of that number. It is the length of a charanas, of which all the yugas are a multiple of.
I don't believe anyone has noticed this before. All sources claim there is no astronomical cycle which matches. Is this a discovery?

Re: Great and Grand Conjunctions

Post by admin »

Thanks James for this exceptional work and research into Planetary Cycles.

To say that this is a massive and valuable work would be a gross understatement. And I’m very sure that many will benefit from this prodigious research and data.

I’m particularly interested in the ‘Grandest Conjunctions’ cycle of Uranus/Neptune conjunctions, given that this ‘Precession’ period is a cross-over from Pisces to Aquarius, and that the last Uranus/Neptune conjunction was in 1993. (Obviously that’s the exact date, but inevitably there are many folk born during the Uranus/Neptune conjunction several years prior to and after that date).

Certainly, as with all of these various conjunction periods, it is well worth investigating World events and the charts of those who played a significant part in such.

This surely is a vital and important reference for any astrologer.

Thanks again for posting it here on this Forum.

Mercury, Venus, and Mars are considered the personal planets, probably due to their nearness. Conjunctions amongst them happen quite often, just like in our own personal lives. The outer planets, however, are considered the social ones. Society usually changes more slowly than individuals. I would think that Uranus and Neptune are especially important for looking at the 'big picture.
Here are some dates usually given for various historical epochs.

c. BC 750-450 Archaic Period
c. 450-1492 Medieval Period
1492-1650 The Age of Discovery.
1650-1789 The Age of Enlightenment
1789-1875 The Age of Revolution
1875-1914 The Age of Empire

Doesn't this match up really well with the conjunctions?

I think the 1200 year cycle is possibly a huge discovery. No one can answer my question about it (another post I recently made). Do you see the last cycle took exactly 24,000 years?!

For the triple conjunctions I simply chose the middle (retrograde) conjunction so as to keep the tables from getting too unwieldy. For those that need to know here are the full statistics on them.

Re: Great and Grand Conjunctions

I'm sure this has been noted before but is worth mentioning. There is a greater and greatest conjunction in the midst of the Apollo program. Some of the dates are amazing, like the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus right next to the Moon right before the landing of Apollo 11.

1969/07/20-07:19:00 Moon conjuncts Jupiter
1969/07/20-07:19:21 Moon conjuncts Uranus
1969/07/20-07:58:42 Jupiter conjuncts Uranus
1969/07/20-20:17:40 Apollo 11 lunar landing

Here's some more.

1968/12/11-15:02 Jupiter conjuncts Uranus
1968/12/21-27 Apollo 8
1969/03/3-13 Apollo 9
1969/03/11-19:37 Jupiter conjuncts Uranus
1969/05/18-16 Apollo 10
1969/07/20-07:59 Jupiter conjuncts Uranus
1969/07/16-24 Apollo 11
1969/11/14-24 Apollo 12
1970/04/11-17 Apollo 13
1971/02/01-06:50 Jupiter conjuncts Neptune
1971/01/31-02/9 Apollo 14
1971/05/22-04:56 Jupiter conjuncts Neptune
1971/07/26-08/07 Apollo 15
1971/09/16-05:30 Jupiter conjuncts Neptune
1972/04/16-27 Apollo 16
1972/12/7-19 Apollo 17

This is a reply to a letter the admin sent me and I thought I should post it here. It's in reference to this:

http://www.viewzone.com/sirius.html

About the Sun-Sirius system. Wow. You would think that someone that had put that much thought and effort into this theory would have at least bothered to do a quick check on the estimated duration of such an orbit. I did. It took me about 15 seconds. The author is obviously hoping that it would be about 26,000 years, thus providing an explanation for the precession of the equinoxes other than the "wobbling Earth" theory. A quick calculation shows... (drum roll, please)

~100,000,000 years!

Ummmm. So it's about 40,000 times longer than it should be. Oh well. Never mind.

Actually, this strong desire to discredit the "wobbling Earth" theory is very telling. Maybe you have seen this video starring James Earl Jones.

The Great Year
youtu.be
Just as the Earth’s spin on its axis causes day and night and it’s annual orbit around the Sun is responsible for the ongoing cycle of the seasons, what if t...

In it he posits that the Sun is revolving around an unseen star; soon to be discovered. However, the WISE survey has definitely ruled this out.

NASA's WISE Survey Finds Thousands of New Stars, But No 'Planet X'

After searching hundreds of millions of objects across our sky, NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has turned up no evidence of the hypothesized celestial body in our solar system commonly dubbed "Planet X."
Researchers previously had theorized about the existence of this large, but unseen celestial body, suspected to lie somewhere beyond the orbit of Pluto. In addition to "Planet X," the body had garnered other nicknames, including "Nemesis" and "Tyche."
This recent study, which involved an examination of WISE data covering the entire sky in infrared light, found no object the size of Saturn or larger exists out to a distance of 10,000 astronomical units (au), and no object larger than Jupiter exists out to 26,000 au. One astronomical unit equals 93 million miles. Earth is 1 au, and Pluto about 40 au, from the sun.
"The outer solar system probably does not contain a large gas giant planet, or a small, companion star," said Kevin Luhman of the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds at Penn State University, University Park, Pa., author of a paper in the Astrophysical Journal describing the results.

This doesn't rule out something like 'Planet Nine', which is large, but not large enough to generate the heat necessary to be seen by the infrared survey. But we can be absolutely certain that there is no object so massive that it could make the Solar System twirl around in space in about 26,000 years or so without out us having seen it. So perhaps that's why Sirius is now being used as the star we revolve around.

So why do so many people want to believe there is? Because the ancients had described cycles of 1200, 3600, and 24,000 years and we just can't find anything to match them. There simply are no planets or planet-like bodies with orbits of 1200 or 3600 years. The 24,000 year cycle, however, is tantalizingly close the 25,800 year duration of a complete precession of the equinoxes . But it just won't do to let the ancients have a poor approximation; we know they were better than that.

This is why I think the 3600 year cycle of the Uranus/ Neptune conjunctions is possibly a huge discovery. Rather, a rediscovery.

What do you mean by the astronomical calendar?

Here's a chart I made of every great conjunction from the one in 2020 to the year 2200. All but once do they take place in an air sign.

There was a Grand Syzygy on April 20th.

Few astrological events are of greater importance than these. Very few.
