I have heard during mahabharat time astrology was constellation based instead zodic based? There was no zodic.

Is it true?

I do not think so, because the movement of sun was very well observed since ancient times.

Yes there was planets but no Zodic .Predictin were made on the basis of planet & constellation

Please search for the meaning of Constellation in google.
It will return a group of stars will form a constellation.
Indians use nakshatra / constellation interchangeably, however constellation actually means a part of the zodiac that is Rasi.

Naks means sky; shetra means area in the sky; which a star or group of
stars - called a galaxy, occupy.
My view is that these stars or constellations do play a dominant role in the
influencing of planets and their interpretation as they are always in the background.
The Moon is greatly influenced by these 27 stations or nakshatras.
